Why invest at all?
Saving and investing are for different things.

Cash savings: A savings account gives you easier access to cash for bills and surprises. Interest rates can change.
Long-term investing: Investments like shares might grow over time, but their value can also drop, sometimes sharply.
Main point: Savings are useful for money you might need soon. Investing involves more risk and generally makes more sense to explore for longer-term goals.
A dollar won’t always buy the same thing.
Think about what a weekly grocery shop cost a few years ago compared with now. That’s inflation: prices going up over time.
Why people invest for the long term.: If the cost of living rises faster than your money grows, it buys less over time. Investing is one way people try to stay ahead of inflation, but returns aren’t guaranteed and fees and tax matter.
See what time can do to the numbers.
Imagine A$1,000 growing at an assumed 5% each year. Move the number of years. This is just a maths example with no fees or tax.
Real investments don’t grow neatly at 5% every year. Some years are negative, and even a long time doesn’t guarantee a profit.
Work out the goal before picking a product.
There’s no need to choose an ETF or broker today. First, work out what the money is for and when you might need it.
What am I saving for?: Saving for a car is a different job from building retirement savings. The goal matters.
When will I need it?: If you need the money next year, a big market fall could be a real problem.
Main point: The goal and when you need the money matter more than picking a product straight away.
What to remember
Investing is one way to try to grow money over the long term. It comes with ups and downs, so money you need soon usually has a different job.
Think of a goal that’s a few years away or longer. When would you need the money, and what would happen if your investment fell in value?
General education only. Examples are simplified. Investments can lose value.
